Buying and Selling in Portland, Oregon

No one fell in love faster with their new home than Selby and Sarah’s 4-year-old daughter.

“When we first saw the house, our kids walked in and they ran around and loved the home. My 4-year old daughter refused to leave,” said Sarah, pointing out that a “secret” attic room might have sealed the deal for the preschooler. “She kept calling it her room and house. And then after we left, she continued to talk about it for the next week.”

The couple, who started looking for a home in Milwaukie to be closer to Sarah’s job as a history and leadership teacher, already owned a home in east Portland. When they learned through Sarah’s school that they could partner with Landed to boost their down payment, they were interested, but understandably had lots of questions.

First, there were the numbers. Did Landed’s down payment plan work for them? How exactly did it work, especially since they also were selling a house? How did finding a real estate agent work with Landed?

“We wanted to know, ‘How does this fit into the process that we’ve actually already gone through? What are the extra added steps?’” Selby said.

The couple got answers and found that working with Landed helped them open their search to a more expensive home that their family of four (and frequently visiting extended family) can be comfortable in for years.

“Landed opened up our search to look for something above our price point that was better suited for our family,” said Selby, who works for an immigration non-profit.

“It gave us more options to find a house closer to Sarah’s school. Inventory is so low that changing the price point even by a small amount made a big difference because with the lower price point it’s just brutal right now in Portland. (The shared down payment) opened a lot of doors for us.”

The couple suggests that other essential professionals check out Landed if they want to buy a home.

“We wanted to get away from our FHA loan to get to a better bang for our buck,” Selby said. “With the rising costs in Portland it seemed like we had more at stake. Landed helped us move from one category of home ownership to another where we are better positioned. They helped us leapfrog into a different economic opportunity. There is opportunity here that can be capitalized, and Landed is a really valid and reasonable option.”

Now they are settled into their home and are enjoying more yard space. And when Sarah stays late at school to chaperone a dance or help with a blood drive, her commute home is quick, rather than 45 minutes.

“We love the home. The layout and the open concept is a dream for events, because we both have large families,” Sarah said. “We have a nice yard and the cul-de-sac is amazing because we were on a busy street before….Other houses, they didn’t compare.
