Landed Launches with Stanford University

Alex Lofton | 5 Apr 2021

Today, Stanford University announced to all of its employees that they all have access to the products and services we offer at Landed. This includes access to our shared-equity down payment program which helps employees of the university wanting to buy a home reach a 20% down payment. As alumni, launching with Stanford is special to my co-founder Jonathan and me because the Palo Alto campus is where we incubated the start-up idea that would eventually become Landed as it exists today.

Extending our homebuying services to all of Stanford’s employees is especially rewarding given our company’s founding was based on principles we studied at the Graduate School of Business and on creative practices we honed at the Stanford d.school. Sitting in an introduction to finance class and studying the mechanics of diversification – the idea of spreading out your money to multiple places so it can grow even when some parts of the economy aren’t – I became motivated. Most of the people I grew up with have to concentrate all of their wealth (and then some!) to afford a down payment on a new home.

Growing up working-middle class, people like my parents did not readily have access to these types of wealth building strategies. Jonathan and I wanted to apply what we had learned previously working for companies in Silicon Valley that use technology to make things more accessible. At Stanford, we began exploring the idea of how to democratize the tools available for people to build wealth.

From the beginning, Landed’s mission has focused on building wealth for those upholding our communities everyday. As Stanford students, we experienced firsthand the 'village' it takes to make the school run smoothly day in and day out – from the admissions staff to the career counselors to those working in facilities. Jonathan and I hope this partnership with Stanford will serve as one small way we can uphold everyone in this educational village that has done so much to uphold us.

Over the coming weeks, a series of informational sessions will be hosted for Stanford employees interested in learning more about Landed’s programs. Details for these events can be found at www.landed.com/stanford.
